Over the last two years, UNDP initiated a series of studies and assessments to contribute to the deepening of our collective understanding of major trends in the Sahel region. This is also part of our contribution to the UN Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS). In that context, UNDP commissioned – through the UNREC (regional UNODA office based in Lomé) - a series of SALW surveys in nine countries including members of the G5 Sahel (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad), Senegal, Cameroun, Nigeria and the CAR. This endeavour was conducted between UNDP and UNREC asa joint undertaking under the Regional Working Group on Security of the UNISS. The broader geographic scope was meant to facilitate the understanding of sub-regional SALW proliferation trends and encourage future joint programming.
